HOSPITAL SUITE DESIGN

Advanced Commercial Studio- Fall 2023

This was the largest and most challenging project that I completed while at MATC. It consisted of designing an entire hospital unit which included a reception area, a healthcare administrators office, a storage room, a patient room + full bath with a connecting family lounge + half bath, 4 nurses stations, a coffee bar, a printer/copy area, an exam room, a procedure room, 2 physician's offices, a conference room, and a full staff bathroom. I chose to do a labor and delivery unit for Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago, Il. I wanted the overall space to be calming, peaceful and homey. It was important to incorporate the Northwestern Medicine logo color, so I did so in soft muted purples. I had to make sure to follow all ADA guidelines during my space planning as well. I executed a complete construction document set with a reflected ceiling plan, a facilities standards binder, and a furniture specifications sheet. I had the opportunity to present my design to the team at National Business Furniture and receive their feedback which was overall very positive.

NATIONAL BUSINESS FURNITURE REFURNISH

Commercial Design Fall 2022

For this project I had the opportunity to refurnish and redesign 4 spaces within the National Business Furniture office building in West Allis. I worked with their head of design, Tonya, and learned all about furnishing commercial spaces. Tonya acted as a client for our class and allowed us to ask all of our programming questions in order to start designing these spaces.

The spaces were not functional as is and some were being completely transformed into new spaces with new functionalities. The rooms were a reception area, a small conference room, a touchdown office, and an executive office. All 4 spaces needed to have a cohesive flow while still maintaining their individuality. The client wanted NBF company colors incorporated throughout the space, medium toned woods, and an overall welcoming vibe. There were different wants and needs for each room individually which made this project challenging, but very rewarding in the end. I started by measuring the office spaces and loosely sketching the floor plan by hand. I then transferred my measurements into AutoCAD and began picking out paints, wall coverings, carpet, accessories, and furniture for the rooms. I created a full construction document set, as well as a furniture specification spreadsheet and a 3D SketchUp model. I had the opportunity to meet with some of Tonya's designers to get advice and guidance on my project and then had my final presentation with Tonya and her team.

ORIGINAL FURNITURE DESIGN

Materials and Furniture Design- Fall 2021

For this project I designed an original furniture piece for Opalhouse at Target. In order to do so, I performed extensive research on Opalhouse as a brand to determine any opportunities where they could expand their product offerings. From my research I discovered that they did not produce any type of clothing rack which are currently extremely popular and trendy. My concept was a boho style clothes rack that is multi-functional with a velvet tufted cushion bench and shoe storage. I started by hand drafting my furniture piece and then creating the final version in AutoCAD. I then created a full scale 3D model in Sketchup. The final steps were creating a miniature physical model and pitching our idea for the company with a presentation.
